Our event "Sufi Music Around the World" at Capital Fringe Theatre DC was a huge regional success and a promising start for infusing Washington, DC with the cultural arts! The purpose of the event was to present Sufi music traditions from different areas of the world and compare and contrast them. This particular event focused on Sufi music from India and Turkey and featured two wonderful ensembles. Rimi Basu and the Shakti Collective Ensemble presented a compelling performance of Indian Sufi music interlaced with English translations of the sacred Sufi poetry of India. The Amir Vahab Ensemble presented Sufi music from a wide variety of poets and regions including Iran and Turkey, complemented by two daf players. The event was an excellent example of cultural collaboration and gave audiences a taste of the similarities and differences between Sufi ideas and beliefs of different regions. It was also inspiring to see how art and music patrons of DC were interested to learn about Sufism, or Islamic mysticism.
